A construction or renovation project requires a variety of technical skills: material selection, regulatory compliance, energy performance, coordination of trades. Obtaining professional advice tailored to each stage helps avoid costly mistakes and project delays. Since 2024, the French regulatory framework has strengthened mandatory support for certain works, altering how individuals prepare their projects.
Mon Accompagnateur Rénov’ Obligation: What the Regulatory Framework Requires
Since January 1, 2024, the use of a certified professional Mon Accompagnateur Rénov’ has become a condition for eligibility for large-scale renovations funded by MaPrimeRénov’ Parcours accompagné. This obligation applies as soon as the cost of the work exceeds 5,000 euros including tax and the requested aid exceeds 10,000 euros (decree no. 2023-980 of October 23, 2023).
This certified professional is not just an advisor. They are involved in the initial energy audit, the preparation of the financing file, the monitoring of the site, and the verification of results. For any project aiming for a gain of at least two energy performance classes with public aid, this step is now necessary.
The texts published in the Official Journal on September 9, 2025 (decree no. 2025-956 and associated orders) have further tightened the system: the Parcours accompagné is now reserved for homes classified E, F, or G in the energy performance diagnosis (DPE). Wall insulation and biomass boilers are only fundable as part of a large-scale renovation.
Before even looking for a contractor, it is essential to contact Guide De Construction Du Bâtiment or a France Rénov’ advisory space to check the project’s eligibility for the appropriate aid pathways.

CAUE and France Rénov’ Advisory Spaces: Two Distinct Free Services
Individuals often confuse these two organizations. They are complementary, not interchangeable.
The Councils for Architecture, Urban Planning, and the Environment (CAUE) exist in most departments. They offer free consultations focused on architectural quality, landscape integration, and material choices. A CAUE helps formulate a coherent program before consulting an architect or project manager. It does not handle the financial setup of aid.
The France Rénov’ advisory spaces, on the other hand, focus on energy renovation. Their role is to guide towards aid schemes, explain the MaPrimeRénov’ pathways, and direct towards a certified Mon Accompagnateur Rénov’ when the project requires it.
- CAUE: architectural, urban, and landscape advice, free, with no direct link to financial aid
- France Rénov’ advisory space: energy renovation advice, free, focused on preparing aid applications
- Mon Accompagnateur Rénov’: mandatory and paid support (partially covered) for large-scale renovations with public aid
Consulting the right contact at the right time avoids losing several weeks. A new construction project without a specific energy component does not need France Rénov’, but benefits from a visit to the CAUE. A comprehensive renovation of an energy sieve, however, starts with France Rénov’.
Check RGE Qualification and the Reliability of a Construction Company
The RGE (Recognized Guarantor of the Environment) qualification is a prerequisite for accessing public aid for energy renovation work. A non-RGE craftsman may be competent, but the work they perform will not be eligible for MaPrimeRénov’.
Checking the qualification is not enough. The RGE mention pertains to a specific area (insulation, heating, ventilation) and has a validity period. An RGE plumber for heat pump installation is not automatically qualified for attic insulation.

Beyond the qualification, three checks reduce the risk of poor workmanship or project abandonment:
- Consult the Kbis extract of the company to verify that it is properly registered and active, which also confirms the existence of a ten-year insurance
- Request a professional civil liability and ten-year insurance certificate dated less than twelve months ago, ensuring that the declared activity covers the planned work
- Compare at least three detailed quotes, line by line, ensuring that each quote mentions the exact nature of the materials, quantities, unit price, and payment terms
A detailed quote protects as much as ten-year insurance in case of a dispute. The mandatory mentions (start date and estimated duration, late penalties, price revision conditions) provide a solid legal basis if the project goes off track.
Architect or Project Manager: Which Professional to Lead the Site
For a new construction exceeding 150 m² of floor area, hiring a registered architect is mandatory. Below this threshold, the choice is free.
An architect designs the project, submits the building permit, and can oversee the work. A project manager (often a design office or a freelancer) coordinates the execution of the site without necessarily intervening in the architectural design. The two professions complement each other on complex projects.
The cost of project management is recouped through the quality of execution. A professional who monitors the site detects deviations from the plans, validates work situations before payment, and manages technical contingencies. In a heavy renovation, the lack of site monitoring is the primary cause of unanticipated additional costs.
For energy renovation projects, the Mon Accompagnateur Rénov’ does not replace the project manager. Their role is limited to administrative support and monitoring energy performance, not to the technical coordination of trades on site.
Choosing the right level of professional support depends on the nature of the project, its budget, and its regulatory framework. Free public services (CAUE, France Rénov’) help frame the project in advance. Checking qualifications and insurances remains the responsibility of the project owner, even when a certified advisor is involved.
